Fortis Supports Wet Utility Relocations for SR 44 Widening Project

September 9, 2026

Construction continues on the Georgia Department of Transportation's State Route (SR) 44 widening project in Greene County, a major transportation improvement designed to support continued growth throughout the Lake Oconee region. The active Phase I and Phase II contracts represent more than $60 million in roadway improvements.

Fortis Siteworks is performing water and sewer utility relocations for the project under Pittman Construction, the corridor's prime contractor.

Current work is focused on the I-20 side of SR 44, where crews are relocating infrastructure for the city of Greensboro in advance of roadway construction. Fortis' scope includes water main relocations, sanitary sewer relocations, fire hydrants, gate valves, sanitary sewer manholes and related underground utility infrastructure required to accommodate the roadway improvements.

As construction progresses, Fortis will continue utility relocation efforts throughout all three phases of the SR 44 widening program. Future work will include infrastructure relocations for Piedmont Water Company as improvements advance along the corridor.
